College Prep Curriculum

HIGH STANDARDS FOR ALL STUDENTS

The learning goals in our environment go beyond college acceptance, university scholarship, or even just good grades on a transcript. Our students are learning to prepare for the next step in life.

Our curriculum offers a challenging workload and development opportunities based on student needs. Ready for Honors or AP courses? National Honor Society? What about vocational or college courses? Lutheran Northwest has your student covered!

Our approach, our philosophy is grounded in God's Word and that manifests itself in so many valuable ways. We are different than public schools and that difference matters in a student's present, future, and eternity. Now more than ever, young men and women need an education that leads in truth so they may learn for life.

AP Scholars

challenging our students to be their best

Every fall, the Advanced Placement Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams. AP Scholar Awards come in different levels and types, and candidates must pass a certain criteria to be eligible.

AP Scholar with Distinction: Students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on 5 or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Honor: Students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on 4 or more of these exams.

AP Scholar: Students who receive scores of 3 or higher on 3 or more AP Exams.

How are AP Scholars Chosen? - Student’s average AP Exam score is calculated based on all exams taken this year and in previous years. The AP Exam scores are then checked to see which counts towards various AP Scholar awards. A student must meet all of the criteria listed above to be eligible. Students can cite the distinctions as a credential on their resumes & applications.

Accreditation & Faculty Development

Learning is a priority For all

Accreditation is an internal and external review process that identifies strategies for building the best possible educational program for learners.

Accreditation through NLSA (National Lutheran School Accreditation) and MANS (Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools) means that the teachers and administrators at Lutheran Northwest have met high standards and are actively engaged in school improvement.

Our faculty continues to learn, steadfastly committed to professional development. All members of our school community strive to continue learning and improving the education Lutheran Northwest students receive.

  • 85% of teachers have an advanced degree (or are actively working toward one)

  • 13:1 Student-Teacher Ratio

Quality Guidance

Helping Each Student Plan for Their Future

From 9th-grade course selection to choosing a college or career, quality guidance during a student’s high school years is absolutely critical. Just like any quality high school, Lutheran Northwest strives to help students in the areas of academic achievement and career consideration, but as a Christ-centered high school, we help our students develop socially, emotionally, and spiritually, ensuring today's Crusaders become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.

Kelly Fink, School Guidance Counselor, has been recognized as an ACT College and Career Readiness Champion.

We recently added the Naviance tool for the benefit of our community. Naviance, designed especially for students and parents, is a comprehensive website used to help students make decisions about courses, colleges, and careers. Students take personality, interest, strength, and talent inventories to learn more about themselves and discover careers that are a good match. They also take a Learning Style Inventory to help them identify how they best learn. Finally, students go through the College Match program, which guides students through finding colleges that are a good fit for them.

Interim & Leadership Development

Learning and Leading, in Action

Interim is a one-week educational experience where students take a non-traditional course in a subject area that is of interest to them.  Teachers plan an Interim course that pertains to a subject/topic/hobby that they are passionate about.  Interim is a break from traditional classroom learning that allows students to explore future career options, deep dive into interesting topics, or serve the community - in some cases, all three!

INTERIM 2022

Leadership Development is a priority for the entire Lutheran Northwest community. Over the course of their four years at our school, students will work their way through a leadership development curriculum based on the work of Christian author John Maxwell. The students will explore twenty-one specific character traits of leaders. Bible stories that highlight the traits will be discussed, seminars will delve deeper into particular topics and guest speakers will share their experiences as leaders. Upper class mentors will receive training to meet with 9th and 10th graders in small groups, providing hands-on leadership experience to those students who demonstrate readiness for this responsibility while also providing the younger students with peer-mentors as they navigate the challenges of being a young teen in an increasingly difficult world. The Lutheran Northwest Leadership Development Program enables our students to be effective and impactful Christian leaders, both now and throughout their lives.

Biomedical & Engineering

Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math

The Lutheran Northwest STEM Biomedical and STEM Engineering Academies provide our top students with the coursework and exciting experiences to thoroughly prepare them for elite university programs in STEM fields. To be accepted into the STEM Academies, students must meet rigorous course expectations as well as be enrolled in Honors and Advanced Placement science courses. These high level courses focus on collaboration, problem-solving, analyzing, and investigating science processes and careers.

With the required course work and off-campus experience, Lutheran Northwest students are prepared to take the next step in achieving their dream career in a STEM field.

Humanities Academy

Humanities Academy Program

The Humanities can be described as the study of all the ways in which people try to record and understand human experience. By exploring literature, language, the social sciences, history, theology, art, music, and theater, students learn how to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask questions. Through work in the Humanities, students learn about the values of different cultures, about what goes into making a work of art, about how history is made. Coursework in the Humanities helps students understand the world we live in and gives them tools to imagine the future.

The Lutheran Northwest Humanities Academy provides our top students with the coursework and exciting experiences to understand the world we live in and give them tools to imagine the future. To be accepted into the Humanities Academy students must meet rigorous course expectations as well as be enrolled in Honors and Advanced Placement social studies and English courses. These high-level courses allow students to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask questions.  These skills allow students to gain new insights into the human experience, adding to their knowledge about our world.  Students who complete the Humanities Academy will receive recognition at commencement and on their transcript and will be well prepared to continue their study of the Humanities at the university level.

Questions about the Humanities Academy Program should be directed to Mr. David Kusch

Dual Enrollment

EARN CREDITS BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL

Yes, Lutheran Northwest students can earn college credit while still in high school! Dual enrollment allows our students to choose from classes not currently available on campus and provides them with a head start in college.

We work with Concordia University Ann Arbor to help our students earn credits beyond high school. The State of Michigan is billed for the authorized amount of tuition and fees. Billing is limited to a maximum dollar amount, and students pay any costs above the limit. Approval of courses and billing authorization is required from Principal Kristi Baughman and/or an LHSA representative.

For more information, please contact Kelly Fink, School Guidance Counselor, at kfink@lhsa.com or 248-852-6677.

Student Opportunities

WHEN THE SCHOOL DAY ENDS, LEARNING CONTINUES

At Lutheran Northwest, Crusaders have numerous opportunities to get involved. These activities allow them to explore interests and create broader perspectives. Students who participate in after-school activities report improved academic performance, more confidence, and higher academic aspirations. Through this involvement, students gain essential life skills: goal setting, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and leadership.

  • 82% of our students are involved in at least one extracurricular activity and most are involved in multiple!
