Does my family need to be Lutheran to attend LHNW?

-No. Lutheran Northwest is an inclusively Lutheran school welcoming students of all Christian denominations.

What is your church affiliation?

-Lutheran Northwest is affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). Our student body is represented by 24 LCMS churches and 47 total non-Lutheran churches.

Are you accredited?

-Yes. Lutheran Northwest is accredited through the Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools (MANS) and through the National Lutheran Schools Association (NLSA).

How are you governed?

-The Lutheran High School Association of Greater Detroit (LHSA) has a Superintendent, and a Chief Financial Officer that oversee the three high schools in the Association, including Lutheran Northwest. A Board of Directors for the LHSA is the governing body for the schools and is elected by Association delegates.

How are you funded?

-Lutheran Northwest is funded mainly through tuition. Additional funding comes from the Association churches and philanthropic donors.

What makes the school “college prep”?

-Lutheran Northwest has a collegiate-preparatory curriculum aligned with the college-readiness standards, as well as STEM, Humanities, and Academy of the Arts endorsement programs, and a number of Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses in our curricular offerings.

What curriculum do you use?

-Lutheran Northwest along with all of the schools of the Lutheran High School Association of Greater Detroit (LHSA) have developed our own collegiate-preparatory curriculum aligned with college-readiness standards of the ACT.

Do your students participate in any standardized testing programs?

-Yes. Students participate in the ACT, PSAT, and SAT standardized testing programs.

Do you offer tuition assistance?

-Members of most LCMS churches in partnership with the Lutheran High School Association receive substantial tuition discounts. Please check with your church on their tuition support. Need-based assistance is also available to qualifying families.

What are your school day hours?

-On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays our school day runs from 7:55am - 3:10pm. On Fridays our school day runs from 7:55am - 2:30pm. In the Spring, our start times remain the same, but school is dismissed every day at 2:30pm.

Do you offer foreign language?

-Yes. Students are strongly encouraged to take at least two years of the same foreign language. Currently we offer a four year Spanish program. Additionally, we offer online German and French programs through Oxford Virtual Academy.

Do you offer music and fine arts?

-Yes. Lutheran Northwest’s music and fine arts programs are exceptional. Students in these programs have consistently earned top honors and recognition!

Are students able to arrive early and stay late at school?

-Yes. Students are welcome to arrive as early as 7:00am and may stay after school until 4:30pm. On most days, it is common for students to be at school later into the evening for extra-curricular activities such as athletics and drama.

What is your average class size?

-On average, our class size is 23 students. Our largest class sizes typically occur in our band, choir, and physical education classes. Lutheran Northwest is committed to providing educational excellence to every student.

Is transportation available?

-There is currently one bus provided to students attending LHNW. The bus travels to and from LHNW from St. John Lutheran in Fraser and Trinity Lutheran in Utica each day. In addition to this bus, many of our families are active in carpooling. The LHNW school office can provide more information on potential carpool opportunities.

Do students wear uniforms?

-No. Students at Lutheran Northwest must follow our dress code which is laid out in our student handbook.

Do you offer hot lunch?

-Yes. A hot lunch option is available daily and provided by the Food Service staff of St. John Lutheran School in Rochester.

What colleges do most graduates attend?

-Lutheran Northwest students have attended colleges such as the University of Michigan, MIT, Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, and Oakland University. Many of our students have also attended schools in the Concordia University System. We have had graduates go on to our military service academies. You will be prepared to go to any college you want to attend?

What leadership opportunities are available at the school?

-Leadership opportunities at Lutheran Northwest include Student Council, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Leadership Cohort, and a variety of other areas throughout co and extra-curriculars. A school wide leadership programs also implemented every Wednesday during homeroom for all students.

What are the athletic programs like at LHNW?

-The Lutheran Northwest athletic programs can be summed up in two words: excellence and opportunity. Our coaches expect excellence, from the effort given during the season to the time spent outside the season. Lutheran Northwest student-athletes have earned district, regional, and state titles both as individuals and in teams. the Lutheran Northwest athletic program offers the opportunity for athletes to be seen and to be part of the program. With the smaller setting, athletes and their parents don’t have to jump through political political hoops and are afforded the chance to participate and shine. Athletes will have greater opportunities to play at Lutheran Northwest and should consider their chances for playing time when deciding which high school to attend.
