Supergood Tutoring!

Tony Harrison with Mrs. Hammett at Lutheran Northwest, March 6, 2020

Detroit native Tony “Super Bad” Harrison would be justified in resting on his laurels, having held the WBC light middleweight title from December 2018 to December 2019. Instead, Tony’s love for Jesus and his heart for children led him to find a way to give back to his community and help the at-risk children of Detroit’s West Side in particular.

Tony’s Superbad Fitness Center had already been providing one-on-one guidance, mentoring, health education and educational enrichment to the Superbad family of kids for a few years. Then, at a charity event this past winter, he met Melissa Hammett, Lutheran Northwest alum and St. John Rochester Director of High School Youth Ministry, and “Supergood Tutoring” was born!

Tony visited Lutheran Northwest on Friday, March 6, and spoke briefly before Chapel about his experiences, his faith and his vision for Supergood Tutoring. What an amazing visit! Lots of Crusaders stopped at the table afterwards to volunteer for one of the planned Saturday tutoring sessions.

This new ministry is a once-a-month opportunity for Lutheran Northwest students - and anyone else who wants to participate - to provide math and reading tutoring to students in grades 1-12 at Superbad Fitness. Even more importantly, you’ll be helping these students to know and hear Jesus through learning and through your actions, as you live out the directive of Matthew 22:37-39:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and will all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

The first Supergood Tutoring session took place on Saturday, March 7. There are three more opportunities to participate this Spring:

  • Saturday, April 25, 1PM-3PM

  • Saturday, May 9, 1PM-3PM

  • Saturday, June 13, 1PM-3PM

To God be the Glory!
